Presenting Apogee MailOps: operations and troubleshooting for self-hosted mail servers

Apogee Information Systems has launched Apogee MailOps, an operations and troubleshooting extension for Modoboa mail servers. MailOps adds server health monitoring, mailbox usage reporting, and delivery failure diagnostics to the Modoboa administration interface administrators already use for domains, accounts, and quotas.

Modoboa is widely used to run self-hosted mail on Linux: Postfix for delivery, Dovecot for mailboxes, Rspamd for filtering, and a web admin for day-to-day account management. That interface handles configuration well, but when a queue backs up, a mailbox fills a disk, or a message is rejected for SPF, DKIM, or DMARC reasons, the administrator still ends up in SSH sessions, separate monitoring tools, DNS panels, and log files to join the dots. Modoboa, however, does not put that operational picture in one place.

MailOps is designed to shorten that path. Apogee built it first for its own Modoboa-hosted mail servers, then productised it. Host metrics, mail-stack service status, domain and mailbox storage, stale-mailbox reporting, and failed-delivery context now sit in the familiar Modoboa admin, while domains, accounts, quotas, message history, and migration workflows stay on Modoboa’s native screens.

The extension is for Modoboa administrators and operators who run production mail: hosting providers, in-house IT teams, and agencies that maintain client mail on cloud or dedicated servers. It installs alongside Modoboa and uses the same navigation for account and domain work.

“MailOps started as the tooling we wanted on our own Modoboa servers: the same admin screen, but with host health, mailbox estate, and bounce context when delivery fails,” said Manolis Tsiamitas, Head of IT Operations and Infrastructure at Apogee Information Systems. “We kept Modoboa as the platform and added the checks we were already running by hand across SSH and logs. Shipping it as a product lets other operators use the same screens.”

Solution & Technology

MailOps extends Modoboa with a series of features:

Server and stack health: CPU, memory, load, network, and filesystem utilisation, plus live status for Postfix, Dovecot, Rspamd, Nginx, uWSGI, PostgreSQL, Redis, and related services. System activity views list resource-heavy processes and recent operating-system or SSH logins so capacity and access issues are visible without a separate login.

Mailbox and domain operations: A server-level view of domains, accounts, mail storage, message activity, bounces, and migration state. Storage reporting shows used space and message counts per domain and mailbox without opening each account or reading quota percentages in isolation. Stale-mailbox reporting combines size, mail presence, and last-login data so idle storage is visible before disks fill. Completed migrations appear in normal account listings and summaries, not only in Modoboa’s separate migration workflow.

Delivery and bounce diagnosis: Message tracing with delivery-path and next-hop detail, recipient-side failure context, and per-transaction diagnostics. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are checked against the failed delivery itself, with a plain explanation of the likely cause and steps operators can verify after changing configuration. Optional AI-assisted remediation is available when an administrator supplies their own API key.

Backup and restore: A guided restore workflow for backup streams and periods, in the same admin environment as the operational dashboards.

Apogee MailOps is available now as a permanent v1.x licence for an existing Modoboa installation, or as part of a complete new-server deployment that installs and configures Modoboa with MailOps.
